Detroit, MI’s WE CAME AS ROMANS will release their third full-length album, Tracing Back Roots, on July 23 via Equal Vision Records.

The eleven track album follows Understanding What We’ve Grown To Be, which was released in September 2011 and debuted at No. 20 on the Billboard Current Top 200. To date, Understanding What We’ve Grown To Be and the band’s debut-full-length, To Plant A Seed, have sold over 183,000 copies combined.

In March, the band travelled to Los Angeles to record the highly anticipated follow-up album, teaming up with renowned producer John Feldmann [The Used, Black Veil Brides, All Time Low].

“It was a true joy to be included in Tracing Back Roots,” notes Feldmann. “WE CAME AS ROMANS push the boundaries of what modern alternative music should be, while staying authentic to their roots. One of the few new bands to keep true to their vision while developing as artists.”

Lyricist/guitarist Joshua Moore adds, “It was honestly a dream come true for the band to be working with John Feldmann, with him being so well-respected and having produced some of our favorite CDs growing up. He brought this amazing new perspective to our group and really pushed me to step outside the box as a writer. I truly believe that this next record is all of the best elements of what we have done so far in music, combined with where we want to go and the music we want to play going forward.”

The new album most notably showcases vocalist Dave Stephens in a new light, with the incorporation of his clean singing for the first time ever. In addition to his signature powerful, yet articulate, screams, Stephens now also displays rich melodic tones and gritty textures, that perfectly balances the soaring, smooth croons of co-vocalist Kyle Pavone. Musically the album expands on the anthemic, inspiring quality of the band’s recently released single “Hope”, offering sweeping guitars interlaced with delicate synth interludes and explosive percussive elements. The resulting album is their catchiest and most universally relatable music to date.

Moore further elaborates on the band’s musical evolution stating, “Though we’ve grown as individuals, musicians, and as a band over the years, we have never changed the meaning behind what our band is, and if anything, on this record we found greater meaning and purpose in the message we are trying to send to listeners. The haunting, intricate album artwork for Tracing Back Roots was illustrated by the incredibly talented Paul Romano [Chiodos, Mastodon], who also created the covers for the band’s two previous full-lengths. Romano and WE CAME AS ROMANS’ bassist Andrew Glass collaborated on the artistic direction of each cover, with the newest one incorporating and elaborating on elements within the first two covers. Glass explains, “The imagery is based on the idea of moving forward with the knowledge that we have learned about ourselves throughout the years, from the darkest to brightest times in life. It represents our continuous work towards transforming into the people we want to be, while always remembering our roots that made us who we are.”

On Saturday, June 8th, the company will celebrate its Fifth Anniversary with a gala event at Irving Plaza, featuring five bands from the New York area. The complete line-up features CHARETTA, WOODS OF ARDEN, MACHINE ELVES, THE AMATORY MURDER and ISPACEWALKSOMETIMES. CHARETTA will be releasing their upcoming album Apocalypse that week.

On Saturday, July 13th Gotham Rocks presents the powerful and ethereal FACE THE KING at Gramercy Theatre, with SHE SAID FIRE, CRUSH OF EMPIRES and CHASING THRILL.

Throughout the album, AUGUST BURNS RED continue to do their part to challenge the conventions of heavy music. “Rescue & Restore is about challenging other bands and ourselves, as well as fans of this music, to want more than whatever happens to be the current buzz,” explains Brubaker. “We’ve done our best with each new album to try to push our sound in new directions and we’d like to see our peers do the same. People need to realize that there’s not much of a difference between a metalcore song that has a couple breakdowns with a repeating chorus and the latest Lady Gaga song. This genre used to be better than that. It can still be better than that.”

Almost exactly two years since the release of their breakout album, Leveler, AUGUST BURNS RED are set to return with their highly anticipated fifth album entitled Rescue & Restore, available via Solid State Records on June 25th.

The album, described by guitarist and principal songwriter JB Brubaker as the band’s “most ambitious album yet,” turns a critical eye to the oft-maligned genre of metalcore, leading by example to prove that bands can still find exciting new ways to expand the genre.

“Rescue & Restore is about challenging other bands and ourselves, as well as fans of this music, to want more than whatever happens to be the current buzz,” explains Brubaker. “We’ve done our best with each new album to try to push our sound in new directions and we’d like to see our peers do the same. People need to realize that there’s not much of a difference between a metalcore song that has a couple breakdowns with a repeating chorus and the latest Lady Gaga song. This genre used to be better than that. It can still be better than that.”

Throughout the album, AUGUST BURNS RED continue to do their part to challenge the conventions of heavy music. Over the course of 11 tracks, the band artfully blend piano, cello, violin, trumpet, various percussive elements and more into their sonic arsenal, taking their music into new aesthetic territory and contorting the boundaries of the genre.

In support of Rescue & Restore, the band will be performing all summer long as a mainstage act on the 2013 Vans Warped Tour, marking their third appearance overall and first since 2011.

With Rescue & Restore, ABR have proven that it is possible to reshape music in a way that challenges listeners, reinvigorates fans and puts art first. But for any fans who fear AUGUST BURNS RED turning their back on the sound that catapulted them to the forefront of a genre, Brubaker advises them not to worry.

“At the end of the day we are still a very heavy band,” he explains. “Rescue & Restore still has plenty of really heavy stuff, techy odd meter riffs, and all the stuff that people have come to expect from us, it just has a lot more surprises along the way.”
